I’ve been chosen: You Are a Magical Girl Tag

Pinkie has come up with a sparkly new blog-tag-award thingy, and was kind enough to tag me in it. The You Are a Magical Girl Tag is all about imagining your very own Magical Girl identity! A story pitch, if you will, for a wonderful adventure with you as the star!

Apparently, Pinkie thought to tag me because I’ve read so much manga and different types of stories. Thank you for the compliment, Pinkie, and I hope that I’ve risen to the occasion.

The Rules:

1.  A Magical Girl is always polite!  So be polite! Display the Magical Girl Tag Logo, thank the one who tagged you and, if you want the tag creator to thank you for participating, tag Pinkie’s original post as well!  That last one is optional though!
2. A good magical girl gets the job done! Answer all the prompts! But do it like yourself! Come up with your own ideas, or compare it with other anime or video games! Anything goes! Just get the job done!
3. A good Magical girl always makes friends! Tag at least 2 people!  More is optional!
There is no 4! That would be bad luck!
5. A Magical girl is not defined by gender! Feel free to tag anyone!

The Questions:

1. A Magical Creature descended from the skies! It is telling you, you are a magical girl!  Describe this magical messenger! What is it.. where is it from?!:

Our story opens with me chilling in my room, reading some manga, when suddenly, a cat-sized poodle moth with a heart-shaped mark on its head, smashes its way through the mesh-screen covering my open window.

It’s all fluffy-wuffy!

I’m, of course, shocked to see such a huge and exotic insect muscle it’s way into my house, but before I can decide if I want to pet the fluffy intruder or smash it with a stick, it starts to talk!

The poodle moth introduces itself as Corycia*, a magical being who was created by a previous generation of magical girls. It’s purpose is to track down and guide future girls, should the ancient nemesis of these legendary warriors return to threaten earth once more.

And, that’s exactly what’s happened! So, Corycia is hunting for the new generation of girls to take up the mantle of the Insecta Nymphs**!

*Note: Corycia is both a synonym for some genera’s of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) and the name of a naiad(freshwater nymph) from Greek mythology.

**Note: Nymph is both a type of mythic nature spirit and a name for some kinds of juvenile insects.

2. Your creature tells you about an evil force from afar! What is this evil force?! What is their goal?!

Corycia goes on to explain that the world is under threat from the Hymenoptera Horde! Led by the evil Queen Vespa, this army of ant-like monsters seeks to conquer the world and transform everyone into mindless drones, who live only to serve the queen.

This menacing army will be composed of all kinds of monsters based on different kinds of ants. E.g. carpenter ants, fire ants, etc.

Later on in to the narrative, there will also be a character who will be introduced as a new Insecta Nymph, but who will secretly be a double agent. This will be Insecta Nymph Wasp (wasps and ants are very closely related and they frequently have colouring that resembles bees because this allows them to sneak into beehives, so this seemed like the perfect insect to act as a spy) and she’ll infiltrate the Insecta Nymphs and will leak information about our plans to the enemy, and just generally sow dissent within the group. She’ll eventually have a change of heart, thanks to the power of friendship, and will end up joining the Insecta Nymphs for real.

3. The creature then tells you, you hold a great virtue, it is the reason you have been selected! What is this reason!:

What possible reason could Corycia have for trusting me with the fate of the world? Simple. It’s destiny.

Corycia has the ability to sense people who’ve been born with the power to become an Insecta Nymph, and simply tracks those people down and delivers their transformation items, in order to awaken their hidden powers.

Speaking of which…

4. After the exposition, a monster shows up at your doorstep! It is time to transform! What is your transformation item?!:

Corycia doesn’t waste any time, I’m the first Nymph they’ve managed to track down and they’re eager to have me join the fight, especially since it seems that an ant-monster has followed them to my house.

With a flap of their wings and a flash of light, an awesome looking sword appears before me. It seems to fit perfectly in my hands and, as soon as I pick it up, I know what to do. I raise the sword above my head, and in a swirl of water, I transform into…

5. Transformation scene time! How do you look as a magical girl?! What is your power and signature attack?!:

Insecta Nymph Dragonfly!

As a teen, I always loved dragonflies as a motif, so it seemed appropriate to use it as the inspiration for my Magical Girl identity. Also, when I did a bit of research, I found out that dragonflies can symbolize: Courage, Strength, Happiness, Transformation, Instability and Rebirth. All of these are things that I associate with magical girls, so it was a perfect fit.

When transformed, I have beautiful dragonfly wings and the power to control water. My signature attack will be called Aqua Mirage Strike. Some dragnoflies have an ability known as motion camouflage, where they adjust their flight patterns so that they appear stationary, allowing their approach to go undetected by their opponent. My signature attack will make use of a similar technique. It will look like I’m not moving, and then I’ll suddenly be right in front of the enemy, slashing with a blade of water for a devastating surprise attack!

6. Catchphrase time! Name some of those lines you repeat in every episode.. and tell us when you use them!  This can be a transformation phrase.. or just something cool you keep repeating!:

Honestly, if I was a magical girl, I think my catch phrase would be “Fuck it!”

7. Are you a solo magical girl?! Do you work in a team?! Are you the first recruit or a supportive one?!:

The Insecta Nymphs are a team of magical girls with 6 members, including myself, because I love stories with an ensemble. I’m the team leader, because I’m conceited, I guess.

Allow me to introduce you to the other members of the team:

From left to right: Insecta Nymph Butterfly, Insecta Nymph Honey Bee

Insecta Nymph Butterfly

Power: Wind

Weapon: Bow

Personality: She’s gentle and sweet and one of the more collected and reliable members of the team. She’s also a total girly-girl and loves sweets.

Insecta Nymph Honey Bee

Power: Plants

Weapon: Fencing Sword (resembles a stinger)

Personality: Honey Bee is haughty and sharp-tongued. She likes things to be just-so and is a surprisingly hard worker. Because of her slight, queen-bee tendencies, she’ll initially not be happy with me being the leader, resulting in some conflict when the team first forms. I’ll eventually win her over and, once she’s accepted me, she’ll become my fiercely loyal right-hand.

She also has a secret. Honey Bee was originally part of the Hymenoptera Horde, before defecting and discovering her destiny as a Insecta Nymph. She’ll try to keep her past hidden from me and other Nymphs, out of fear that we wouldn’t trust her if we knew the truth. This will wind up backfiring and lead to problems later on.

From left to right: Insecta Nymph Firefly, Insecta Nymph Ladybug, Insecta Nymph Jewel Beetle

Insecta Nymph Firefly

Power: Lightening

Weapon: Spear

Personality: Shy and awkward, Firefly starts off very quiet, but will open up to the group more as we all become closer friends. She’s very smart and will be the groups tactician. She also has a huge crush on Butterfly and there will be a cute romance subplot with these two.

Insecta Nymph Ladybug

Power: Fire

Weapon: Hammer

Personality: Cheerful and outgoing, Ladybug has tons of energy and is always raring to go. Her spontaneous nature can sometimes get her into trouble, but she’s resourceful and good at thinking on her feet, so she can usually get herself out of it.

Insecta Nymph Jewel Beetle

Power: Earth

Weapon: Scimitar

Personality: Athletic and tough, Jewel Beetle is very accepting of others and is a big ol’ teddy-bear at heart. She can be a bit blunt at times, but is also slow to anger, usually letting things roll off her back. She is very protective of her friends, however, and will get very angry if she feels they are being mistreated. If you do manage to get her mad, you better watch out! I feel like Jewel Beetle and Ladybug would be best friends.

That’s the main team, but, as I mentioned earlier, a mole infiltrates the Nymphs at some point in order to stir up trouble.

Damn, why do the villains always look the best?

Insecta Nymph Wasp

Power: Poison

Weapon: Darts

Personality: Wasp is clever and manipulative, easily playing the part of a friendly and quirky new Nymph, who’s eager to join the team and help save the world. She’ll have been created to have abilities that resemble an Insecta Nymph, so she’ll be able to fool Corycia’s Magical Girl sensing radar.

While Wasp and Honey Bee won’t have met, prior to her showing up in her role as a spy, she’ll be aware of the fact that Honey Bee used to be a member of the Hymenoptera Horde, and will use that information to cast suspicion on her, once it starts to become clear that there is a traitor in our midst. We’ll eventually figure out the truth and win Wasp over to our side, however.

Once she’s a true member of the team, her knowledge of the inner workings of the Hymenoptera Horde will prove invaluable. She’ll remain a bit mischievous, even once she’s turned good, though.

8. Every magical girl  has a goal in her normal life as well! What would your goal be?!:

All I would want for my future would be to get a simple, normal job – with benefits – that involved very little responsibility and stress. I’d be so burnt out from trying to save the world that I wouldn’t have the energy to focus on a more complicated goal then that.

9. What is the dark twist to your being a magical girl?!:

The terrible cost of being a magical girl would be the anxiety and mental health consequences that come with being under such an intense amount of pressure. I would do my best to act cool and brave while I was Insecta Nymph Dragonfly, and then would go home and cry uncontrollably every night.

Overtime, my mental health would start to deteriorate, until I had a mental breakdown. This would lead to a story arc where my friends will come together to support me and get me to seek professional counseling, and I’d realize the importance of reaching out for help when you need it and relying on your friends.

Prior to getting professional help with my anxiety, I would go through a period of emotional detachment, where my powers would become ice powers and I’d get a new attack called Devil’s Darning Needle***, which would involve shooting a blast of icicle shards. The other members of the team would initially think that I was just unlocking new abilities because I was getting a better handle on my powers, and would only later realize that it was a sign of how poorly I was doing internally.

***Note: Devil’s Darning Needle is an old colloquial name for dragonflies in some parts of Europe and I thought it sounded like a cool name for an attack.

An earlier concept drawing. I think the black pants look sharper, but I liked the pose, so decided to share it.

Well, there you have it, that’s my idea for a Magical Girl story with me as the heroine.

I had a lot of fun coming up with all of the details and was so inspired, I even broke out my rusty art skills so I could draw all of the Nymphs. I used to draw a lot as a teen, but haven’t been doing much lately, so I’m definitely out of practice. Regardless, I’m pretty happy with the designs I came up with, overall.

Now, to spread the joy! I hope that these people will have as much fun coming up with their own Magical Girl identity as I did.

  1. Wow! This one was super enjoyable to read! It would make such a cute show!
I’d totally have a crush on butterfly as well!

This kind of reminded me of the Jet Force Gemini N64 game but with magical girls instead of soldiers.

I love al these designs , they feel like such a well balanced ensemble! I totally see Wasp dying in the end though, giving her life for the team.. or at least attempting it, only to be brought back by the cutest moth ever.

The dark secret is also nice!
I personally really like the grey-ish pants, I kinda imagned they’d be black translucent panty hoses. Which feels quite magical to me!

Thanks for doing the tag and the great read!

    1. You’re welcome and thanks for coming up with such a fun tag!

I just googled Jet Force Gemini and those ant baddies look about right. We’d definitely be fighting guys like that.

Wasp trying to sacrifice herself sounds like it would be a very dramatic scene for the finale. We can’t have her actually die, though. She’s my favourite!

I liked the grey pants as well, but I think the black ones match with the groups overall look better, so I ended up going with those.

  2. Thanks for the Tag! Great concept and I love your designs. I’m going to have to pull out all the stops when drawing my designs.

I’ve always wanted to write a magical girl series and I came up with a couple of designs a few years back, so those should come in handy.
