How long have you been a geek? The Geeky Childhood Tag asks us to look back and recall the geeky obsessions of our childhood selves.
Now on to the main event:
1. Where did your geek come from? Parents? Siblings? Destiny?
My geekiness definitely came from my family. Both of my parents loved fantasy novels and shared their love with their kids. As we grew older there were a bunch of books that we would all read and discuss with each other. We also used to play Dungeons & Dragons together as a family. I always played as a druid, because I loved animals. I’m also a fan of Star Trek because my mom was a Trekkie. I used to watch Star Trek The Next Generation as a kid all the time and I only became more passionate about it as I got older and was able to appreciate it on different levels.
My older brother was also a huge influence on me as a kid. We used to watch a lot of cartoons together like X-Men, He-Man and She-Ra, Thunder Cats and Transformers. We also watched Dragon Ball together, which was my introduction to anime.
2. The First Geeky Thing You Got Into
It’s hard to remember what would have been the first geeky thing I was into, but I remember being really into Power Rangers when I was around 8 years old and playing it with all the kids in my class. In case you were wondering which ranger I would play as, the answer is none of them. I usually played the villain, Empress Rita!
3. Favorite TV Show as a Kid
I had a number of favourite shows as a kid. I loved X-Men, Gargoyles, Reboot, Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon.
If I have to pick one favourite though, it would be Batman the Animated series. I LOVED this show as a kid! This was another of those cartoons that my brother and I would watch together all of the time and there are certain episodes that I remembered vividly even years after I had watched them. When the series was released on DVD and I was able to rewatch it, I was delighted to see that the show mostly holds up all of these years later and I still love it now as an adult.
4. Favorite Movie as a Kid
Again, there are a number of movies that I loved as a kid, including: the Transformers Movie, 101 Dalmatians and The Lion King.
I remember being especially obsessed with The Land Before Time. I made my parents rent it over and over again and I used to pretend to be Cera and ram my head into people like she did in the movie. By the way, I always assumed that character’s name was “Sarah” and only recently realized that her name was actually spelt “Cera” and was a reference to Triceratops. Talk about being slow on the up take!
5. Favorite Video Game as a Kid
Pokémon was my favourite game as a kid and it’s a series I still enjoy now (I’m currently playing Pokemon Shield in fact). While it wasn’t the first video game I ever played (that was probably Duck Hunt), Pokemon Blue was the first game I played on my own and the first game that I ever beat. This series will always hold a special place in my heart as a result.
6. Favorite Book as a Kid
I really loved the Redwall series of books by Brian Jacques. These featured anthropomorphised animals living in a medieval fantasy world and who must fight to protect their home, Redwall Abbey, which was constantly being threatened by some evil horde of rats or weasels or something. I continued to read this series well into my teens and well after I had become tired of the repetitive nature of the books.
My favourite book in the series was Mossflower, partially because it was the first book in the series that I read, and partially because the lead character in this book was Martin the Warrior, who was the best character, as far as I’m concerned.
7. Favorite Memory as a Kid
When we were kids, my brothers and I would always sleep in the same room on Christmas Eve and stay up late talking and telling each other stories. I still looks back on those times fondly.
8. A Character You Looked Up To as a Kid
I don’t know that I really looked up to any characters as a kid. There were a bunch of characters that I loved or thought were cool but I don’t really remember thinking: “I want to be like them”.
9. A Character That Scared You as a Kid
The Ghost of Christmas Future from the Disney version of A Christmas Carol used to scare the crap out of me as a kid. Probably because he was designed to be evocative of Death. The scene where he finally reveals his face and then shoves Scrooge into the open grave was so scary to me back then! I still loved that Christmas special though.
10. A Movie That Scared You as a Kid
When I was around 6 years old, my mom rented the Watership Down movie for me to watch. It looked like a cute movie about fluffy rabbits, so I was excited to watch it. I made it about half way through the movie before I ran crying from the room. This was a dark and violent movie with some really disturbing imagery and it was way to intense for my 6-year-old self to handle. For years after that my older brother would threaten to make me watch the movie again in order to get me to do things.
I eventually read the novel the movie is based on as a teen and I really enjoyed it. When the new mini series adaptation of Watership Down came out on Netflix I finally went back and rewatched the movie. I thought it was a decent adaptation of the book and enjoyed some of the more surreal visual sequences. There were some scenes that I still found upsetting watching as an adult though. Definitely wouldn’t recommend it for kids.
Thanks again to Tiger for the tag. I had a lot of fun answering the questions and looking back on all of the geeky things I’ve loved over the years.
I’ve been seeing this tag going around a lot so I don’t think I’ll tag anyone else this time, as it seems like most people have already been tagged at least once. But if there’s anyone reading this who hasn’t been tagged by someone else and is interested, please consider yourself tagged by me.
